The Colors Of Self Acceptance

This 16 X 20" oil painting on black canvas is an exploration of self-love and acceptance, captured through vibrant, yet contrasting colors. It was created on a deep black canvas that symbolizes the emotional darkness we all face. This is also representative of how far I've personally come with self acceptance, beginning in a dark place and slowly working towards the colorful person I am today.

The fluorescent pinks, purples and blues symbolize the love and happiness that we seek within ourselves on a daily basis. The expression on my face is tinged with sadness as I gaze at myself, softly caressing my face with vulnerability in an act of reflection. Even in moments of despair, the potential for self acceptance shines through.

I chose a handheld mirror as my still life object as a symbol for introspection. The mirror is ornate and beautiful, with a butterfly that is symbolic of a transformation as powerful as the one I have overcome over the years. I chose to paint myself fresh out of the shower, with wet hair and no makeup on to further challenge my own self acceptance through the act of painting myself completely raw.

In a society littered with photoshop, makeup, and facial surgeries, I hope to make an impact on my viewer and challenge them to look within themselves. I hope to help them realize that they do not need to change their outer appearance to love themselves.
